Okay, can we talk for a minute about how fast the years fly by? I am feeling that reality so deeply right now. We just graduated another one of our students this spring. That means I am down to my final two high schoolers at home! With eight of my ten children now graduated and out navigating the world, I am reminded of how short these summer months truly are.
It is so easy to fall into the “busy trap” during the summer. We rush from one activity to the next without actually connecting. But I’ve learned that if we want to cultivate a happy heart in our homes, we have to intentionally seek out moments of joy, wonder, and shared learning. One of the best ways to do that is by stepping out of the school room and into the great outdoors!
I love this state. It has truly become my home over the years, so I want to share my ultimate Arkansas Family Fun Guide for Summer 2026 with you! Arkansas is packed with rich history, breathtaking nature, and hands-on science. The best part? So much of it is completely free or highly budget-friendly, making it the perfect canvas for your summer family adventures.
Let’s dive into the ultimate guide to making memories together this season!
State Parks: Nature’s Classroom
Our state parks are a treasure trove for gameschooling and hands-on science lessons. From geology to native history, these spots offer immersive learning that beats a textbook any day.
- Mount Magazine State Park: Take your teens to Arkansas’s highest point, standing tall at 2,753 feet! The panoramic views are breathtaking, and the visitor center offers fantastic exhibits on local wildlife and geography.
- Petit Jean State Park (Rock House Cave): Walk the trail to Rock House Cave—which is actually a massive, ancient rock shelter. It is the premier spot in the state for viewing Native American rock art created over 500 years ago. Don’t miss the unique “Turtle Rocks” geological formations along the way!
- Lake Catherine State Park: Lace up your sneakers for a beautiful, family-friendly two-mile hike featuring rolling hills, clear streams, and a stunning waterfall. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic and a nature scavenger hunt.
- Historic Washington State Park: Step back into the 19th century! This legendary stop on the Southwest Trail was traveled by James Bowie, Sam Houston, and Davy Crockett. You can visit the very Blacksmith Shop where James Black forged the original Bowie knife. From 1863 to 1865, this town even served as the Confederate capital of Arkansas. Today, it holds the largest collection of 19th-century buildings in the state. Homeschool Perk: Stop by the 1874 Courthouse visitor center, the Weapons Museum, and the Print Museum. If you’re planning a group trip, call 870-983-2660 to request their updated Teacher’s Guide. Before you leave, grab lunch at the Williams Tavern Restaurant for a taste of history!
- Crater of Diamonds State Park: Located in Murfreesboro, this is one of the only places in the world where the public can search for real diamonds in their original volcanic source. For a small admission fee, your family can search a 37-acre plowed field—the eroded surface of an ancient volcanic crater. The best rule? Any rock, mineral, or gemstone you find is yours to keep!
- Civil River Red River Campaign Sites: If you are studying American history, you can visit south-central Arkansas to see where three major Civil War battles took place in the spring of 1864: Poison Springs, Marks’ Mills, and Jenkins Ferry Battleground State Park. Together with Historic Washington, they form a National Historic Landmark. You can download educational brochures directly from the Arkansas State Parks website.

You don’t have to drive far from downtown Little Rock to find beautiful spaces to explore, move, and photograph.

A Prayer for Your Homeschool Family This Summer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful gift of our children and for the incredible freedom we have to learn and explore Your world together. As we step into these summer months, I pray that You would protect our schedules from empty busyness and instead fill our homes with purposeful joy. Grant us safety as we travel these Arkansas roads, climb these mountains, and explore these historic paths. Open our eyes to the wonder of Your creation and use these moments to draw our hearts closer to one another and closer to You. Settle our hearts in Your peace, and let our homes be a wellspring of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
There is so much to see, do, and learn right here in my incredible home state. I know you and your family will have a beautiful time making memories together this summer!
Don’t Miss This Opportunity!
Sending our kids out into the world is one of the hardest acts of trust we face as parents. We spend years praying over them, guiding them, and hoping they make choices that honor the Lord. When it comes time for them to take that next big step toward college, that surrender feels even heavier. We desperately want our children to step into a community that nurtures their faith rather than tears it down.
That is exactly why I am so grateful for Colorado Christian University.
At Colorado Christian University, they offer more than just an outstanding education. They provide a steadfast foundation of biblical truth. Their professors are committed to mentoring students and helping them view their choices in career paths through the lens of a Christian worldview.
Whether your teen is looking forward to experiencing campus life or your family is exploring online dual-credit options through Colorado Christian University Academy to get a head start, you can have peace of mind knowing your student is in an environment that values what you value.
Trusting an unknown future to a known God is a daily surrender. Partnering with a university that shares your family’s core convictions makes that transition just a little bit easier.
