3 Everyday Rhythms That Invite Jesus Into Your Mom‑Life Madness
If you could peek through my kitchen window at 6 a.m., here’s what you’d see:
- A teenager headed to basketball practice, rummaging for clean socks (again).
- Two adult daughters video calling from Poland—showing me their preschool classroom before my coffee even perks.
- My ninety‑five‑year‑old grandma calling out from her bedroom because she is hungry and thinks it’s dinner time.
- A half‑written novel on my computer, which is sitting on the breakfast nook table, still sticky with yesterday’s maple syrup.
That’s my “quiet time.”
Years ago, I believed real devotion looked like tiptoeing to a candle‑lit corner with a leather‑bound Bible. But somewhere between adopting seven children and final‑draft number ninety, Jesus whispered, Time with me is about presence, not creating the perfect moment. Daughter, I love you just as much when everything is a mess. Lean into Me.
Maybe you can relate to some of these points. And no doubt you have a list of your own.
Today I’m sharing three rhythms to invite Jesus into your mess. These are the habits God used to steady me while cuddling an adopted newborn, while signing my first book contract, and while shedding ninety pounds through healthier choices. They’re doable in a minivan, a hospital room, or a homeschool co‑op parking lot. Let’s dive in.
1. Pause Before Your Feet Hit the Floor
Back when our newly adopted teen girls first moved in, mornings felt like boarding a roller coaster—no seatbelt, just hang on and pray. One dawn, before chaos erupted, I whispered:
“Jesus, I give You this day—my plans, my pace, my people. Lead my words and guard my heart.”
It took 60 seconds. But that surrendered minute reframed the next 1,440.
A one‑minute surrender can reset a twelve‑hour day.
Try it: Before you even check the weather app, speak a one‑sentence prayer. Let heaven set the agenda.
2. Loop the Love Languages
Gary Chapman taught us how to love. John Mark Comer reminds us practice shapes what we love. I married the two ideas during our family’s “Laundry Basket Years” (you know—the season when the hamper is never empty and someone is always crying, sometimes me).
My loop looked like this:
Love Language | 30‑Second Practice in the Goyer House |
Words | Slip a Post‑it on my son’s pre-algebra book: “Your mind is a gift. Go change the world!” |
Acts | Refill John’s coffee pod so my husband sees Jesus in caffeine form. |
Gifts | Tuck a protein bar into a teens pocket for her mid‑morning snack. |
Time | Sit on the floor and build LEGOs with the grandkids—no phone, just me. |
Touch | A quick shoulder squeeze as I pass the daughter doing her homeschool work. |
Love languages are holy habits. Little deposits of intentional love accrue eternal interest.
3. Flip Fear With a Faith‑Filled Question
When our oldest daughter called from overseas saying, “Mom, I’m overwhelmed,” fear punched me in the gut. Jamie Winship’s Living Fearless pushed me to ask Jesus a curious question right in the panic:
“Lord, what do You want me to know about this?”
I sat still for sixty seconds. A verse surfaced—“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT). Peace followed. So, I took a practical step: I sent a Paypal love gift and a text prayer. The crisis calmed.
Curiosity is the doorway where fear exits and faith enters.
Wrapping the Story
This morning those same rhythms anchored me again:
- Pause—while a Grandma slowly ate as I fed her.
- Loop—filled a water bottle for the sock‑searching teen.
- Flip Fear—as I watched news of global unrest and tuned in to worship music instead
The kitchen didn’t suddenly hush, but peace planted itself deeper than the noise. And that peace changed the atmosphere.
Your Turn (A 7‑Day Mom‑Life Challenge)
- Choose one rhythm—pause, loop, or flip.
- Practice it daily for a week.
- Record one sentence each night about what shifted.
- Share your story with me or another friend
Practiced presence isn’t reserved for monks or minimalists. It’s also for moms balancing novel deadlines, Optavia coaching calls, and grandma’s doctor appointments. It’s for anyone brave enough to believe Jesus inhabits the beautiful mess of everyday life.
Slow down, speak love, live fearless—and watch Him write joy into every line of your story.
