Almost thirty years ago—way back in January of 1997—a dear friend of mine, Mary Ann, sent me a note that totally reshaped how I viewed my daily mindset. It was a clipping with the following quote:

“Your attitude isn’t a state of mind, it is a reflection of what you value.”

Rich Wilkins

When I first read those words, they hit me deep. How often do we wake up feeling completely defeated before our feet even hit the floor? We look at our massive to-do lists, we look at our own human limitations, and we instantly slip into a rhythm of “I can’t.”

But as followers of Jesus, a happy, healthy heart doesn’t depend on our circumstances or our independent strength. It relies on our position in Christ. In his classic book Victory Over the Darkness, Neil Anderson shared a list called the “Twenty Cans of Success.” I love this because it isn’t about worldly, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps positive thinking. It is an “I can” rooted completely in the unshakeable promises of God’s Word.

Whenever you find yourself spiraling into doubt, worry, or feelings of worthlessness, open your Bible and replace those lies with these twenty beautiful truths:

The 20 “I Cans” of Spiritual Success

  • 1. I can overcome inadequacy: Why should I say “I can’t” when the Bible says I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength? (Philippians 4:13)
  • 2. I can trust my needs are met: Why should I feel a sense of lack when I know that God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus? (Philippians 4:19)
  • 3. I can live without fear: Why should I fear when the Bible says God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind? (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • 4. I can walk in my calling: Why should I lack the faith to fulfill what God has asked me to do, knowing that He has allotted to each of us a measure of faith? (Romans 12:3)
  • 5. I can stand strong: Why should I be weak when the Bible says the Lord is the strength of my life, and that those who know their God will display strength and take action? (Psalm 27:1; Daniel 11:32)
  • 6. I can claim victory over the enemy: Why should I allow Satan supremacy over my daily life when He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world? (1 John 4:4)
  • 7. I can reject defeat: Why should I accept defeat as the final answer when the Bible says that God always leads me in triumphal procession in Christ? (2 Corinthians 2:14)
  • 8. I can make wise choices: Why should I lack wisdom when Christ has become wisdom to me from God, and God gives wisdom generously when I ask? (1 Cor. 1:30; James 1:5)
  • 9. I can conquer discouragement: Why should I be depressed when I can recall to mind God’s loving-kindness, compassion, and faithfulness, and find fresh hope? (Lamentations 3:21-23)
  • 10. I can banish worry: Why should I worry and fret when I can cast all my anxiety on Christ because He cares for me deeply? (1 Peter 5:7)
  • 11. I can walk in freedom: Why should I ever live in spiritual bondage knowing that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is true liberty? (Galatians 5:1)
  • 12. I can silence shame: Why should I feel condemned when the Bible explicitly states there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus? (Romans 8:1)
  • 13. I can reject loneliness: Why should I feel alone when Jesus promised He is with me always, even to the very end of the age? (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5)
  • 14. I can accept my blessings: Why should I feel like a victim of “bad luck” when the Bible says Christ redeemed me from the curse so I might receive His Spirit? (Galatians 3:13-14)
  • 15. I can find true peace: Why should I be continually discontented when I, like Paul, can learn the secret of being content in any and every circumstance? (Philippians 4:11)
  • 16. I can value my worth: Why should I feel completely worthless when Christ became sin on my behalf so that I might become the righteousness of God in Him? (2 Corinthians 5:21)
  • 17. I can overcome insecurity: Why should I live with a persecution complex when I know that if God is for me, absolutely nobody can stand against me? (Romans 8:31)
  • 18. I can find clarity: Why should I be paralyzed by confusion when God is not the author of confusion but of peace, giving us knowledge through His Spirit? (1 Cor. 14:33; 2:12)
  • 19. I can refuse to feel like a failure: Why should I feel like a failure when the Bible declares that in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us? (Romans 8:37)
  • 20. I can withstand pressure: Why should I let the heavy pressures of life shatter my peace when I can take courage knowing Jesus has already overcome the world? (John 16:33)

Over the past few years, I’ve undergone a major change in the way I live and in the choices I make. Through my health journey, I’ve discovered some “I Cans” of my own:

The “I Cans” of Living Whole and Healthy

  • 21. I can honor my body as a gift: Why should I neglect my physical health when the Bible says my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price, and meant to honor God? (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
  • 22. I can practice self-discipline: Why should I feel controlled by old habits or cravings when God has given me a spirit of self-control and power? (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • 23. I can find strength to move: Why should I give up when I feel weary, knowing that God gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might? (Isaiah 40:29)
  • 24. I can choose life-giving nourishment: Why should I feed my body things that weigh me down when I can choose what is good, remembering that whether I eat or drink, I can do it all for the glory of God? (1 Corinthians 10:31)
  • 25. I can rest without guilt: Why should I run myself into the ground when the Lord invites me to lie down in green pastures and leads me beside quiet waters to restore my soul? (Psalm 23:2-3)

Guarding Your Heart

When we look at these lists, it becomes incredibly clear that a heavy, anxious heart usually happens when we choose to value our fears over God’s truths. If we want a truly healthy, joy-filled spirit, we have to actively trade our daily worries for His promises. We have to open up these “cans of success” and feed our souls with the solid food of Scripture.

Try picking just one or two of these verses today. Write them down on a sticky note, place them on your dashboard or kitchen sink, and whisper them to your soul whenever the weight of life tries to steal your joy.

We truly need each other on the journey of life. Scripture reminds us that the body of Christ has many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). The part I always believed to be my weakest was my willpower. Yet, because I struggled, I can now offer help.

My struggle was not meant for defeat. It was meant to lead to victory, and to help others find their victory, too.

A Prayer for an “I Can” Mindset

Lord, forgive me for the times I let my thoughts wander into the territory of “I can’t.” Forgive me for letting worry, loneliness, or feelings of inadequacy dictate my day. Thank You that my strength does not come from my own human effort, but from Your indwelling Spirit. Help me to firmly grip Your promises today. When the enemy tries to tell me I am a failure, remind me that I am more than a conqueror through Jesus. Fill my heart with Your perfect peace and unshakeable joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
